Qayyim Academy introduced to archery

On Saturday November 5, the sport of archery was introduced to Qayyim Academy which is located in Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara, by Archery Guyana. With the goal of becoming the next school to register an Archery Club, Principal of the School Mrs Bibi Romena Constantine-Mohamed had reached out to the federation, which was finally done on Saturday last. Discussions were held between the Principal and Head Coach Nicholas Hing on the sport and its various forms, with the ultimate goal of Olympic recurve archery. With the help of Archery Guyana’s archer/instructor Saeed Karim, Head Coach Nicholas Hing gave the scores of excited children (and their Headmistress), the chance to try out for the first time how to use the bow and arrow.      

Exciting start to National Indoor Archery Championships 2022

The 2022 National Indoor Archery Championships shot off on Monday 7th November at the National Gymnasium with lots of excitement. The competition is being contested by more clubs this year since the 2 newest clubs to be officially associated with the federation, The Archery Guild and ProArchers Guyana along with School of the Nations’ Nations Archery Club have increased the numbers for a more exciting tournament. The ranking rounds for the Barebow Division were completed on Monday with the Men U18, Women U18 and Women, and Tuesday with the Men, all vying for the top spots. The next Round will be in the Recurve Division which will run off on Thursday at 5pm at the same venue. This will see all categories shooting; Women U18, Women, Men U18, Men, while on Friday the elimination matches for the Men & Women barebow, Men U18 & Women U18 Barebow, and Men Recurve will take place. Finals for all Divisions will be on Saturday from 1:00pm. Archery Guyana affiliates new club: ProArchers Guyana

On Thursday 3rd November, 2022 Archery Guyana the governing body of Archery in Guyana and the sole entity affiliated to World Archery, the international governing body for the Olympic sport of archery, grant affiliate status to “PRO ARCHERY GUYANA”. This is a part of Archery Guyana’s mandate as a national member association from World Archery to administer the sport at a local level. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, Secretary General and Nicholas Hing Director and Head Coach of Archery Guyana presented the official certificate of registration and affiliation of the Archery Club “Pro Archers Guyana” to Coaches Anand Mangra and Narda Mohamed-Mangra the founders of  “ProArchers Guyana”. The Club was founded in October, 2020 and have since introduced Archery to persons across the length and breath of Guyana. They currently train at the National Stadium, the National Racquet Centre and the Gandhi Youth Organsation (Woolford Avenue, Georgetown) on weekends and during the week. Members of ProArchers Guyana will now access the substantial benefits of “ARCHERY GUYANA” being an affiliate club. The Archery Guild registers under Governing Body, Archery Guyana

Archery Guyana Head Coach Nicholas Hing on Friday 4th November, 2022 presented to Samira Duncan of “The Archery Guild” their official certificate of registration and affiliation. Ms. Duncan indicated that “The Archery Guild can provide a fun and safe atmosphere for anyone who would like to learn about the sport. They will teach you how to safely practice as well as other areas so that you can fully enjoy and pave the road for your own future, if you wish, in the sport of Archery”. Archery Guyana is the sole governing body of Archery in Guyana, having been granted affiliate status to World Archery which is the international governing body for the Olympic sport of archery. World Archery has national member associations across the globe to administrate the sport at a local level. As such, Archery Guyana is pleased to grant affiliate status to The Archery Guild since this brings substantial benefits to club organisations and to club members. Archery Guyana will be represented at the XXVI Panamerican Archery Championships

Archery Guyana has been growing and expanding throughout Guyana, with the aim of putting Guyana on the map through the sport of archery since this is an Olympic sport. The Secretary-General, Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, just shared some very exciting news with the local media. Two of their members namely Wayne DeAbreu and Devin Persaud Permaul who will be participating in the XXVI Panamerican and V Para-Panamerican Archery Championships, to be held in Santiago, Chile on November 21-27, 2022. This tournament is a World Ranking Event and will be the main Qualifier Tournament for the SANTIAGO 2023 Panamerican and Parapan American Games.  The tournament will be held at the Bernardo O´Higgins National Military Academy in Las Condes County in their capital city, Santiago. Mrs. Persaud McKinnon expressed thanks to the Honourable Minister of Sport, Minister Charles Ramson and the National Sports Commission.

Region 9’s Archery Guyana’s Competition Lots of natural talent displayed in 1st ever Recurve Archery shoot

Archery Guyana's Region 9 Competition 2022 sponsored by Oasis Waters/Guyana Beverages Inc. and overseas based group: Friends of Old, was completed on the 26th September 2022 with the presentation of the medals done at the opening of the Region 9 Heritage celebrations at the St. Ignatius Village. The medals were presented by Honorable Prime Minister Mark Phillips, the Prime Minister’ s wife Mignon Bowen-Phillips, the Regional Executive Officer Karl Singh, the Mayor of Lethem Mr. John Macedo and the Touchao of St Ignatius, Quarrie and Kumu Villages, Mr. Wilson Laurentino. The archery competition began on the 24th of September 2022 at St Ignatius Village’s Wilson Laurentino Sports Ground with a ranking of the cadet archers. The 5 Cadet archers competing were: DaSilva, Chris DaSilva, Kevin Adrian, Fernando Gomes, Roland Hamilton, Ezra The competition was a 10 metre ranking round consisting of 5 ends of 6 arrows.  Results were: Ezra Hamilton - Gold Kevin Da Silva - Silver Roland Gomes - Bronze The following day the females competed but because there were only 2 archers the competition was solely a ranking one of 5 ends of 6 arrows with the results being: Juan, Rea - Gold Simon, Rosita – Silver [...]

Archery Guyana represented at the CARIBBEAN DEVELOPMENT CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Caribbean Development Championships also known as the “CDC” is a fairly new event to the Archery calendar. This Championship was designed to promote and grow archery within the developing Caribbean and Latin American regions with expertise from the already developed regions of archery. This year it was held in Santo Domingo, Dominica Republic from September 5-9, 2022 with athletes staying in the Santo Domingo’s Olympic Village. Archery Guyana was represented by its member, Ms. Samira Duncan. Ms. Duncan participated in the Senior Women Recurve Beginner event winning a Bronze in this event. She also was able to team up with Carlos Espinoza, A Dominican republic Archer to win the Mixed Doubles Recurve Bronze Medal. Final results in the Senior Women Recurve BEGINNER which is a category specially created recently are as follows: Cynthia Gonzalez – Total of 525 with 9 (10+X) and 1 bullseye Yonaigris Matos Cordero – Total of 524 with 4 (10+X) and 0 bullseye Samira Duncan – Total of 477 with 8 (10+X) and 3 bullseyes During her time there, Archery Guyana facilitated her participation from the 7th-9th at a morning Coaching Training Seminar with Coach Phil Graves. Archery Guyana returns to St. Ignatius village to conduct training exercise  

Archery Guyana sets up base in Region 9. In a recently concluded successful event, Archery Guyana met with the Toshao and Village Councillors of St. Ignatius village to continue to develop archery training for residents of St. Ignatius and Lethem. Key representative and trainer for Archery Guyana, Mr. Robert Singh met with Toshao Mr. Wilson Laurentino, Deputy Toshao Mr. Allan Ambrose, Councillors: Ms. Sherry Fredrick, Mr. Roldon Welcome, Mr Jonathan Joseph and Mr.  Moris Campion to discuss the new initiative.   Archery Guyana provided the village with targets, stands and equipment for training sessions Coach Robert Singh assisted by Coach Shunette Thompson also demonstrated the shooting techniques using soft rubbers. Participants were trained from St Ignatius and Lethem on the different types the archery equipment, safety rules in archery, shooting stance positioning and much more at Wilson Laurentino's sport ground in St. Ignatius Village, Region 9 on Sunday the 1 July 2022 from 14:00 - 17:30hrs. President of Archery Guyana, Mohamed Gamal Khan becomes Guyana’s first certified Continental Archery Judge.

Archery Guyana congratulates its’ President Mohamed Gamal Khan on successfully completing the World Archery America’s recently concluded Continental Judge’s Training Seminar where he was one of three to graduate and be certified as a Continental Judge. Mr. Khan’s achievement is especially impressive since he has achieved this elevation a mere two years after being trained as a National Judge. This training seminar offered a unique opportunity to the 5 (five) persons ,who attended the Training Seminar from across the Western Hemisphere, to secure this highly desirable certification. The program was intensive and comprehensive resulting in Mr. Khan being one three persons to successfully complete and receive the coveted certification. He is now uniquely placed to assist with the advancement and development of the discipline in Guyana. Archery Guyana is especially pleased since it has in its ranks a World Archery Americas Certified Continental Judge given that Continental Judges are held in high esteem and depending on their personal commitment this can also open a pathway into becoming an International Judge on WA (World Archery) roster of Judges. NSC/Archery Guyana’s Independence Indoor Open Shoot 2022 Persaud takes gold in Men’s Recurve & Barebow Duncan and Boodhoo take gold in separate divisions for the Women Youths also walk away with gold medals  

Archery Guyana’s Inaugural Open Competition sponsored by the National Sports Commission came to its climax last Saturday night at the Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) in the final night of the Barebow Division. The week-long competition commenced on Monday 23, 2022 with the ranking rounds for the Barebow Division where all participants from Archery Guyana and ‘The Archery Club’ shot to achieve their best scores. Competing were Youth Men category: Antuwan Lamazon; Youth Women category: Amara Nandan; Barebow Women category: Lisa Khan, Roshini Boodhoo and Tifanny Ramdayal; and in the Barebow Men were Sean Duncan, Jeewanram Persaud, Saeed Karim, Fabian Ramdatt and Kenrick Cheeks. The youths, Lamazon and Nandan automatically medalled since they were the only ones in their respective categories. For the Women, Lisa Khan came out on top against Roshini Boodhoo followed by Tifanny Ramdayal. And Sean Duncan topped off the Men followed by Persaud, Khan, Ramdatt and Cheeks. Action continued on Tuesday with the Men and Women Recurve ranking rounds. Sean Duncan again topped the rankings with Jeewanram Persaud just 17 points behind him.
