Ministry of Indigenous People’s Affairs/Archery Guyana Heritage Games 2019 archery competition a success

The culmination of a 2-day competition of traditional archery saw archers battling it out for top honours at the Indigenous Heritage Games 2019 on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22, September at the Everest Ground. Among the more than 60 registrants were De Chief Archery Club team from Mainstay in Region 2, and the Archery Rupununi team from Region 9. The day’s shooting began at 12:30 pm on Saturday with the ranking rounds and by day’s end saw qualifying archers for the following categories: Cadet Females U12 – Aliya Melville, Marisha Melville, Anjalie Adams and Akelah Stanley, Cadet Males U12 – Ravedo Kanhai, Sean Duncan Jr, Robeno Kanhai, Stephon Pearson, Jeremy Dundas, Youth Females 13-17 – Beyonce Dundas, Sarah Fredericks, Serena Clenkian Youth Males 13-17 – McLee George, Mark Anthony, Bert Paul, Josh john Adult Females 18+ - Kim Manbodh, Brenette Gordon, Yvonne Pearson, Rushelle Dundas, Nodlyn Krammer, Aucilda Paulin, Suzette Haynes. Seven Seas jumps onboard with Archery Guyana for Indoor Championships

The inaugural Archery Guyana’s Seven Seas Indoor Championships 2019 was held on Sunday September 15th at the National Gymnasium. Sponsored by Seven Seas, the competition shot off at approximately 11:00 hours after opening remarks by Archery Guyana President Gamal Khan and Seven Seas Brand Manager Nirvana Thakur. The competition began with the Ranking Rounds which determine the pairing of archers for the competitive elimination shoot out. The resulted demonstrated the positive effects of the Archery Guyana’s Development Programme whereby Archer Jeewanram Persaud outshot the more senior Archers to put himself in top spot with 215 points out of a possible 360 for the men whilst Narda Mohamed managed to stay ahead of her fellow Archers to maintain top position with a quality shoot of 194 points. In the Junior women, the top position was a sensation with Jessica Callender making serious gains on Talitha Kissoon, to secure the top spot after an even score by having scored more 9’s to capture the top post with neither of them scoring any 10’s.The junior men debuted at their first archery competition with the top position went to Isaac Baksh scoring 10 points over his twin Ephraim Baksh. Archery Guyana’s SEVEN SEAS Inaugural Indoor Championships 2019

Archery Guyana will be hosting its Seven Seas Inaugural Indoor Championships 2019 on Sunday 15th September, 2019 at the National Gymnasium. Guyana’s best local talents will be on display aiming for the bragging right of best Indoor Archer. Here Archers will have to demonstrate great discipline, strength and stamina to walk away with the title. The qualities required by the Archer to achieve success twins harmoniously with The Seven Seas products which are the culmination of a continuous process of rigorous and intense research and development resulting in natural products known for their excellent quality and high standards in helping families live their TRUEAGE by their range of products built on the science of OMEGA-3. According to Mrs. Nirvana Thakur, Brand Co-ordinator, Seven Seas sees itself as a natural collaborator with the Sport of Archery. This is especially true given the intense level of stability, precision and concentration required to succeed in the sport. Archery Guyana represented at Double 720 Qualification (Baltimore)

On Saturday 24th August, 2019, two of Archery Guyana members Wayne Gerald DeAbreu and Devin Persaud, participated in the World Archery approved tournament, Double 720 Qualification in Baltimore, Canada. Under bright clear blue skies, our two Guyanese started the day in Baltimore with the half hour of practice time to sight in their Recurve Bows then started shooting 72 arrows and scoring the first 720 during the morning session which resulted in DeAbreu with a 626 score and Persaud with a 620. After a break, the afternoon session commenced with the other 72 and that concluded the second 720 round, after which DeAbreu secured 603 and Persaud emerged with a 644 thereby elevating his ranking. Archery Guyana is pleased to report that Devin Persaud is currently ranked 9th in Canada after the top 5 scores are recorded and Wayne DeAbreu is ranked as 17th in Canada. Current plans and training are ongoing to continue to shoot upcoming Tournaments to continuously better scores and raise the ranking and ultimately the level of Archery. Archery Guyana’s DEVIN PERSAUD creates history as the first Guyanese to secure a Minimum Qualification Score for Recurve Men with a 640 score.

At the recently concluded Caledon Tournament, (August 2019) Archery Guyana was represented by Devin Persaud in Ontario, Canada who performed amazingly to cause Guyana to now be on an official List released by World Archery as one of the countries eligible to apply for the invitational place at the Olympics. The Minimum Qualification Score for recurve men is 640. The minimum score is 640 to be eligible and he was eligible to shoot this score up to June 2020. However, he did so before this time in Ontario, Canada by shooting the score (640) at this World Archery sanctioned event. Our Archers can do so at other WA sanctioned events, including world cups, the Pan Am Championships to take place in Mexico in March, the World Ranking Event to take place in Colombia at the beginning of June, and any other events (national or international) registered in the WA Calendar.  As a result, we will be eligible for an invitation places for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.  There are only two invitation places for the whole world.  Archery Guyana intends to start the process to request our best archer and have to seek to engage the relevant persons within the timeline. Hydration was the talk of the morning of Tuesday 30th July, 2019 at the Press Conference at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue. Secretary-General of Archery Guyana, Mrs. Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon noted that for Archery and any Sport overall, hydration is very important In this regard, she expressed pleasure at the fact that Archery Guyana will be entering into a partnership with Guyana Beverages Inc of Plot 4A Area AA1 Plantation Great Diamond East Bank Demerara whereby Guyana Beverages Inc. will be sponsoring water products for Archery Guyana. Brand Manager of Guyana Beverages Inc., Mr. Raymond Govinda indicated that Archery is one of the sports his Company wanted to get involved with and support over the years and that he was happy to make this collaboration. Director of Sport Mr. Christopher Jones bestows gold medal of acknowledgment on Archer Mr. Robert Singh for outstanding achievement in Archery

At a Mid-morning of Tuesday 9th July, 2019, Special Presentation Ceremony organized by the National Sports Commission in honour of Archery Guyana’s performance at the recently concluded 3rd Annual Caribbean Beginners and Developmental Championships held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on June 28-30, 2019 Guyana’s sole representative Archer – Mr. Robert Singh who secured medals in all of the events was honored with a presentation of the Gold Medal of Acknowledgement for outstanding achievement at an International  Sporting Event by the Director of Sports Mr. Christopher Jones. At the morning’s presentation, Mr. Singh displayed his Medals with pride to the Director of Sport Mr. Christopher Jones: These events saw contestants from eight countries: Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Colombia, British Virgin Islands, St Kitts & Nevis, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana. These Championships were organized as a stepping stone to prepare for World tournaments and games for Caribbean Archers who have not competed in a World Ranking event. Archery Guyana participates in Plus1% Training Seminar

Archery Guyana continued its development programme when it took part in a Guyana Olympic Association’s sponsored training seminar focusing on the Plus 1% software database. This software enables sporting entities to enter their athletes into a central database for participation in all World Games. Head Coach Mr. Nicholas Hing together with archery coach, Mr. Umasankar Madray successfully participated in the 2-day training workshop held on June 29-30, 2019 conducted by Ms. Gail Craig-Archer, Senior Office administrator, BOA Inc at Olympic House, Liliendaal, ECD and at the Georgetown Club. The Board of Directors of Archery Guyana acknowledges this useful collaboration with the Guyana Olympic Association as Archery Guyana continues to pave the way for Guyanese to participate in the sport of Archery locally, regionally and internationally. ARCHERY GUYANA’s ROBERT SINGH secures MEDALS for GUYANA in the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Archery Guyana debuted appearance at the 3rd Annual Caribbean Beginners and Developmental Championships held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic was historic in many ways. It the first time the Golden Arrowhead was hoisted by a Guyanese in an Archery Competition in that country and also realized Guyana’s first archery medals at an international competition. The championships held over the last weekend, on June 28-30, 2019 were contested by participants from eight countries: Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Colombia, British Virgin Islands, St Kitts & Nevis, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana. These Championships were organised as a stepping stone to prepare for World tournaments and games for Caribbean Archers who have not competed in a World Ranking event. Guyana’s sole representative Archer – Mr. Robert Singh secured medals in all of the events. On the first day with 72 arrows Qualification Round, our Guyanese Archer secured the second position with 292 points trailing by 3 points behind Dominican Republic’s first place. Robert Singh held his own amongst all the archers displaying excellent form and marksmanship as he threatened the contestants in the qualifying round with 576/720 losing the Gold by a mere 11 points behind the Gold Medalist Jeudy Santos (Dom) [...]
